In Cancer, normal cells in the body transform or mutate into cancer cells. This process is called malignant transformation and it can be caused by a genetic predisposition or by environmental exposure such as cigarette smoking or asbestos exposure. Cancer may be a solid mass or tumor or it may be a blood borne disease like leukemia. When the cancer spreads beyond its origin, it has metastasized. Metastasis may occur via the blood or the lymphatic system or both. Typically, metastasis is poor prognosis finding.
Survival rates for cancers vary dramatically based on the type of cancer and how advanced the cancer is when it is diagnosed. Formal staging criteria is used when a cancer is diagnosed and the “stage” is used both for prognosis and for treatment.
