Whether you run errands or commute to work, you’re bound to found yourself driving near a semi-truck or commercial vehicle. Semi-truck accidents are highly dangerous, but there are several precautions that drivers can take to limit their risks. If you or a loved one has suffered an injury in a semi-truck accident, consider seeking legal representation from the lawyers at Cardaro & Peek.

Avoid Blind Spots

Commercial drivers are trained to operate a semi-truck safely, but there are often several areas that the driver can not directly observe due to obstructions. Most of the time, semi-truck blind spots are located behind the truck, on the sides of the truck, and within one thousand feet in front of the truck. To avoid a collision due to a blind spot, consider slowing down or changing lanes to remain in the driver’s line of sight.

Keep Your Distance

As a rule, you should drive at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front of you. Add another two seconds for semi-trucks and double your following distance during a rainstorm or other inclement weather. If you follow a semi-truck too closely, you will not have enough time to slow down or brake if the driver has to come to an immediate stop.

Always Pass Safely

It’s okay to pass a semi-truck, but it’s important to use precaution. If traveling downhill, wait until the roads level out to pass a large commercial vehicle. Ensure that you are not passing a truck in their blind spot, and always pass a semi-truck on the left-hand side if possible.

Anticipate Wide Turns

Large vehicles like semi-trucks require wide areas to turn. If you are near a truck while it is turning, remain stopped until the truck has completed its turn. Do not block the intersection and make sure to stop behind the white line until the truck has turned completely.
